By Colorado Mountain Living | Updated October 2026
Copper Mountain plans to open for the 2026-27 ski season on November 6, 2026, backed by a multi-year rebuild of its snowmaking system, a second straight season of World Cup competition and a summer business that keeps growing. Copper’s president and general manager, Dustin Lyman, laid out the plan at the Summit Chamber’s Ski Area COO Summit, held at Copper Mountain on October 9, 2026. Colorado Mountain Living was in the room. Below is what Copper announced and what it means if you own, or plan to own, property in Summit County.
Key takeaways
- Opening day is planned for November 6, 2026, with snowmaking starting as soon as temperatures allow.
- Copper replaced 20- to 30-year-old snowmaking infrastructure, added high-efficiency guns and extended coverage to new trails.
- World Cup alpine racing returns Thanksgiving weekend (November 28-29), followed by the Toyota U.S. Grand Prix on December 19-20.
- Last season’s Thanksgiving World Cup drew more than 40,000 spectators over four days, one of the largest events in resort history.
- Summer weddings doubled from 2023 to 2026 (46 weddings in 2026), and the bike park now has more than 19 miles of downhill trail.
- Copper won the National Ski Areas Association award for Best Overall Safety Program.
When does Copper Mountain open for the 2026-27 season?
Copper is targeting November 6, 2026. Lyman told the audience that crews would start making snow the moment temperatures cooperate. The opening-weekend festival returns on November 7.
The bigger story is why Copper is confident about early-season terrain. After a dry 2025-26 winter across Colorado, Copper made a large investment in its snowmaking system: legacy pipe and equipment installed 20 to 30 years ago was replaced, new high-efficiency snow guns went in, and the network was expanded onto trails that previously relied on natural snow. Lyman framed it as protection for low-snow years and a better product in November and December regardless of the forecast.
What World Cup events is Copper Mountain hosting?
Copper calls itself “the athletes’ mountain,” and the 2025-26 season backed that up. The resort hosted three World Cup events in an Olympic year. U.S. and international teams trained full-length downhill at Copper before the 2026 Games, and Copper hosted its first alpine World Cup since 2001 over Thanksgiving weekend. More than 40,000 spectators attended across four days of men’s and women’s racing. Mikaela Shiffrin won her 104th World Cup race there, and Summit County’s own Kyle Negomir raced on his home hill.
For 2026-27, the schedule includes:
- Copper Cup alpine World Cup: November 28-29, 2026, with Center Village festivities starting Friday evening (DJ, stage show, fireworks), a Saturday awards ceremony, giant slalom bib draw, free concert and fireworks. VIP packages are available.
- Toyota U.S. Grand Prix: December 19-20, 2026, on Copper’s 22-foot superpipe.
- Other competitions: U.S. Revolution Tour, an IFSA Big Mountain stop, an uphill race series, the Special Olympics Colorado Winter Games (hosted at Copper for more than 30 years) and USASA Nationals, which brings about 2,000 young athletes at the end of the season.
- Guest events: Safety Fest, Subaru WinterFest, four spring dates of evening après party laps with select lifts running late, a Red Bull relay event in March and a reimagined pond skim.
How has Copper Mountain’s summer business changed?
Copper is now a year-round operation. In summer 2026 the resort ran its nine-week Woodward summer camp on a man-made glacier, joined a multi-resort mountain bike pass network linking its bike park to more than 70 destinations, opened a new trail (One Buck) and extended the Jackrabbit Jumps line. Copper Bike Park now has more than 19 miles of downhill trail.
Weddings are the clearest number. Copper hosted 46 weddings in 2026, double its 2023 total. Free weekly programming such as on-mountain yoga and ranger-led hikes, plus a summer concert calendar that closed with a festival featuring The Revivalists and Turnpike Troubadours, rounds out the season.
Safety and community investment
Copper received the National Ski Areas Association award for Best Overall Safety Program for its slope safety campaign, and its risk manager received the association’s individual Safety Champion award. The resort reported more than $2.5 million in financial and in-kind community support, more than $980,000 raised through its charity ticket program and a July conservation summit that brought 15 ski resorts together to review Copper’s carbon sequestration study.
What Copper Mountain’s plan means for Summit County real estate
Resort capital plans are one of the inputs Colorado Mountain Living tracks when we advise buyers and sellers. Here is how we read Copper’s announcements:
- A longer, more reliable early season. Snowmaking coverage is what keeps November and December bookable in a dry year. For owners who rent their property, early-season reliability protects Thanksgiving and holiday revenue, the weeks that carry a large share of a winter rental calendar.
- Event weekends create demand spikes. A Thanksgiving World Cup that drew 40,000 people and a mid-December Grand Prix put Copper and surrounding towns in front of national audiences and fill lodging on specific dates. Owners should price those weekends accordingly.
- Summer is no longer an afterthought. Doubling weddings in three years and expanding the bike park adds paid demand in months that historically ran soft. That improves the year-round case for owning near Copper and in nearby Frisco.
- Know the rental rules before you buy. Short-term rental licensing in Summit County varies by jurisdiction (unincorporated county, Frisco, Silverthorne, Dillon and Breckenridge each have their own rules). If rental income is part of your plan, verify licensing for the specific property before you write an offer.
